That Girl is a splendid slice of short film. Written, produced and directed by up and coming artist, Annabelle Lawton. That Girl explores a unique take on a slice of life, with subtle references to Lawton’s home town of San Francisco, all while showing us an upfront look at stereotypes and gender assignment stigmas in our everyday environment. Creative, dynamic and entertaining! Other production crediting goes to crew including Ajakari Porter-Robinson as videographer, Josh Turiel as Assistant Director, Steven Quinn as editor, Kevin Fields with sound design, Max Manker aka naahant as soundtrack, field recording by Matt Sabotage Nakamatani.
Have a look.
With the End of 2013 closing, we wanted to make sure and Highlight some of the absolute Heat on the calendar even though its starting to get really cold outside! BASSBLOG sent field reporter Jason “Iggy” Imig out to retrieve some more upclose looks at MC’s in the Regional Hip Hop scene. With A huge show coming up Dec 19th at The Crooked I Erie PA put on by 2189 and BENCHERS UNION, and a brand New Mixtape about to set it off, we wanted to find out what exactly makes Pittsburgh MC, Jon Quest tick. BOOM!
Most MC’s these days are one dimensional…they find their niche and stay there. The story weaver, the battler, the metaphorical cat but few and far between do you find one who encompasses all these in one physical form. Jon Quest is one of those dudes. Having come up through the historic Shadow Lounge era of Pittsburgh hip hop, Jon earned his chops getting involved in their Rhyme Cal series of events. As one half of the Varsity Squad duo, with his homey Beedie, Jon has been able to branch out of the 412 area and start to build a solid fan base of his own.
Currently Jon is working on his third mixtape in his Seasons series, appropriately titled Season 3. Make sure to catch Mr.Quest when he comes to the Crooked I December 19th with Copywrite, Mic Excel& Short Moscato, and Erie’s own Ill Noyz!

You are in the beginning stages of working on Season 3 of your series of mixtape. Are there any producers or MCs you are reaching out to that haven’t been on your past releases?
I wish I could answer this right now but as you stated yourself, I’m in the beginning stages of working on it so it can really go in any direction. I will tell you that I will bring back some of the crew that I did work with as far as producers and I’m going to try to reach out to some new artists for features and producer work! It’s still up in the air right now. I have some new jams on deck that aren’t 100% finished or just haven’t been the right time to release it yet. It might even be a whole new JQ…just never know. Stay tuned! There are going to be surprises i can promise you that!
You have been coming up to Erie pretty steadily since Varsity Squad came up to 2189. How have you seen it change since then and what is it that makes you excited to play here?
Before I came up to Erie, I always thought to myself “man I would never go Erie…what’s even up there?” but now Erie is like my 2nd home. The energy and love that I receive as a solo artist, or group, is incredible. It’s not always like that here in Pittsburgh, I’ll be honest. Erie is a special event every time if its 100 or 10 people in the crowd for the show
You were/are apart of the whole RhymeCal events. Do you feel that has had an impact on your MCing and if you could explain to people reading this how rhyme cal differs from your typical rap battle ..
Rhyme cal has definitely helped shape how I rhyme. It forces you to use your imagination and get out of the box which is what I like to do anyway so rhyme cal was just that advanced course to the school of emceeing for me. For the people reading this – RhymeCal is a freestyle competition with several categories. Although you will have battling one on one at some point in the game but you’ll also run into crowd topics, or may even have to battle a fictional character in 45 seconds to an instrumental. Best emcee gets the grand prize.
What other music do you dig besides hip hop? Who have you been listening too lately?
I try to listen to everything brother – If you live in a box you’ll produce that box type music. Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of TDE, Infected Mushroom, 90s hip hop golden era just to get my mind right to create Season 3 the way I want to create it. It’s really all over the place when it comes to listening to music.
You def have an affinity for video games…favorite system and what games have you been spending time on?
I’m Sony all day! I recently started playing “The Last of Us” again. I beat it in 3 days…tweak mode haha. I should’ve taken my time so that’s why I’m giving it a second spin. I copped the PS4 but Call of Duty Ghosts is the only game I have for it and just like any other COD game…it gets old quick.
Congratulations on your newest addition to your fam. I know you take being a father very seriously. How does being a dad/husband impact you doing your thing musically?
The thing about being a family man and doing other things that can consume your time is all about finding the balance. It’s hard to do but somehow I manage. Every once in awhile I will let life consume me and put music on the back burner and end up getting writers block for however long it may be BUT at the end of the day family is more important than music. Music is just a stress reliever for me and something that I love. When that day comes that I can take care of my family from doing music as a career well then…my story will change but for now it is what it is.

Its Burning up!!!! And Only getting Hotter! July 27th thru 28th…. PITTSBURGH PARE5ET, Collective Thought Project & 1337 Come together for the first time ever to bring you the Faded Fest After Party with San Francisco based producer WORTHY!
When it comes down to all the press and hype, his name says it all. He is Worthy. With an in-depth knowledge of production, mixing, and performance, Worthy has the insight to play for his audience, cultivating intense positive energy on the dance floor that can only be portrayed as superhuman. His sound can be described asorganic breakbeats with a mix of future house, 80’s, booty bass, and techno. As Carl Cox said, “The Worthy sound has always been powerful, rocking, funky, bass-driven music at its best, and for me this is the new wave in house music.” Worthy has received the recognition of major producers who have played his tracks including Sven Vath, Diplo, and Richie Hawtin, among many. From salty aired islands to dark club basements, Worthy pays reverence to the traditional form of classic house while tripping off the mark and sinking into the euphoric less-charted territories of booty-clapping bass. Touring the globe, Worthy has performed at renowned venues like Hive in Switzerland, Sankeys in the UK, Electric Pickle in Miami, and Mezzanine in San Francisco. Beloved by his fanatical devotees, Worthy has drawn huge crowds to catch his heart-palpitating, sweat-inducing sets at festivals like Coachella, Ultra, Love Parade, and Burning Man. In 2011, Urb Magazine named Worthy one of the Top DJ’s To See at Burning Man, along with M.A.N.D.Y., Andy C, Soul Clap, Seth Troxler, and The Crystal Method. Growing up in Washington DC, Worthy was inspired by the early American rave scene. Upon moving to New York in the late 90’s, he was exposed to artists like LTJ Bukem and Stacey Pullen whose music inspired him to play records across multiple genres, from techno and breaks to hiphop and drum n’ bass. In 2001 he swapped coastlines, moving to San Francisco to pursue his music career. He team up with Claude VonStroke as well as fellow east coast brothers Justin and Christian Martin to create the prodigious outdoor party, Dirtybird, which quickly became an institution and a requisite destination for die-hard Bay Area and international fans. Dirtybird Records hatched from the popularity of these parties in 2005, and since then the label and parties have enjoyed tremendous success fueled by the obsession of their cult following. In 2007 Worthy’s breakout track, Irst Te, released on Dirtybird, quickly established his notoriety as a producer. Concurrently, Worthy released Crack El EP on Leftroom, and soon after, the track Work The Walls and it’s accompanying music video on his personal label, Anabatic Records. Originally intended as an outlet for the release of his own music, Anabatic quickly branched out to sign new artists. Riding the frontlines of today’s music scene, Anabatic Records has been providing a steady stream of edgy, high quality tracks. In recent years, Worthy has produced a consistent slough of top releases. The release of Worthy & Yankee Zulu’s Concumbia charted in the Top 10 on Beatport for tech house in 2009. He also released various tracks and remixes on Discobelle Records. In the fall of 2011, Worthy teamed up with UK producer Eats Everything. Their first track, Tric Trac, released on Dirtybird received industry praise. Played by artists like Diplo, Boyz Noise, and Cats N’ Dogs, Tric Trac wildly grew in fan appeal moving on to become one of the Top 10 on Beatport for tech house once again. Additionally, Worthy’s simultaneous releases, No Cure and With This combine dirty ass-clapping breaks and gritty synths. The pinball effect of his intricate basslines traverse across the cavern of your ear canal moving inward and blowing your mind. Illustrating the diverse juxtaposition of his range and sound, his February 2012 release, Why You Waiting, on Alive Records, is like glassy water on a quiet morning sea, his beats & melodies mirroring each other, creating a melodic interface that warms the soul. As Worthy states “I want to push my new sound, which is leaning more toward a breakbeat old-school vibe, but still want to keep with the fact that I play house and techno. My focus is to stay innovative and authentic and to continually reinvent myself as an artist.” Worthy has an original flavor that will amp you up, leaving you feigning for more. The synchronization of Worthy’s music speaks to the connoisseur, the DJ, the groupie and the novice alike. Finding balance and unison across all electronic music platforms, his music is unparalleled. He reads his crowd, breaking and fusing genres, blending styles, and establishing an energetic dance floor camaraderie that makes even the most skeptic hater’s booty shake. http://www.dirtybirdrecords.com/worthy-irs-te-2/ With DJ support from: Dave Clevr – RE5ET Chico – RE5ET Tenova – RE5ET/1337 Omen – Collective Thought Project Doverspike – 1337 Robbie Rockso – 1337 Wired Mic – 1337 $10 Cover Saturday, July 27th |
